Case Study: Snapchat Marketing and Right-Wing E-Commerce Scams

Every voter should be aware of the false narratives and fake news surrounding the US presidential election. That is why Alethea in partnership with the Global Information Index launched the Election Protection Project. The team will use public and open source information to inform voters of the networks seeking to undermine them ahead of the election.

Our third report, that was covered by The Daily Beast, details an e-commerce scam targeting Trump supporters. Alethea investigated a marketing firm purchasing a significant amount of political advertisements on the Snapchat platform that claim to give away free Trump merchandise to users. After inputting personal and financial information to cover the “shipping” costs, users reported never receiving merchandise and instead accruing miscellaneous charges on their accounts.
